about

PLEASE DO NOT PAY $1000 FOR THIS RELEASE. There is a new remastered version at:

sixorganssleeptones.bandcamp.com/album/sleep-tones-vdsq-edition

I am keeping this page up for all of the people who paid money for this release over the years so that they can still stream it. Unfortunately Bandcamp has no way to disable the buying function so I have set the price to $1000 to keep people from purchasing. Apologies for the craziness, I wish bandcamp had a better way.

---------

This project began from my own insomnia. Though I have mostly beaten my bouts of insomnia, in 2019 I began to have a new kind where I would wake up at 4am and not be able to go back to sleep. Sometimes I would just get up and start my day, but sometimes I had hardly had any sleep after going to sleep late and desperately wanted to drift off again. I went to youtube to look up music to fall asleep to and become disappointed with the music that was available. Most of it had abrupt chord changes or extraneous playing, as If the musician couldn’t help but add their own ego. What I needed was something with more of a drone and cyclical playing that didn’t really go anywhere. I needed music that didn’t develop at all, because otherwise the mind followed the development. In this way I think music to fall asleep to veers away from ambient music, especially modern ambient music which is usually quite exciting. For music to fall asleep to to be a success, it really must go nowhere and do nothing. Using ideas taken from relaxation methods, such as lengthening the breath with every out-breath, I started to make my own pieces to fall asleep to. I don’t know if this will be the same for everyone, but perhaps it might help (I know when I was a teenager I found thrash metal put me to sleep, so everyone is different.) I consider these to be more “pragmatic tone pieces” than music, to tell you the truth.

If you are going to download onto a phone and play to go to sleep, I highly recommend using headphones with a very long cord, or at least keeping your phone as far away from you as possible. Or make sure you turn off your wireless on it etc. That EMF shit sucks and will not only fry your brain, it’ll ruin your dream world.
